Almost 5,000 youth ages 5-12 participated in our Summer Reading Program this year. Kids read books, wrote book reviews, and created art to fill in their summer game boards. Grand prize winners received a pack of books, toys, and art supplies tailored to their age level.
This year over 1,000 kids ages 0-4 participated in our Summer Reading Program for pre-readers. Based on Every Child Ready to Read practices, this program encouraged the habits that foster early literacy - parents reading, talking, singing, writing and playing with their children.
The Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL) has awarded its early literacy award to the SPELL (Supporting Parents in Early Literacy through Libraries) program. PCCLD has been a key contributor to this statewide program, which has been led locally here by our very own Kirsten Dees (Youth Services Librarian with Early Literacy Emphasis) with support from a number of staff from throughout the library district..
Congratulations to Ray Cory, winner of the 2016 Adult Summer Reading grand prize!
Ray won a FitBit Alta for reading five or more books this summer.
Thank you to everyone who participated!
In my role of coordinating security efforts for the district, I have worked to tighten up some of our procedures to ensure consistency in practice AND so you know what to do in the event that a problem happens.
Many of the schools for D60 & D70 utilize the Accelerated Reader program which assigns levels to books, and has tests for the student to take after reading the book. You might have had students and parents come into the library looking for "AR" books.
