I am pleased to announce that the CAL Awards Committee has awarded PCCLD the Early Literacy Award for 2015-2016 for our SPELL program!
SPELL is an outreach program coordinated by our Early Literacy Librarian, Kirsten Dees. Kirsten - along with Paula Pryich, Cathy Shepherd, and Elizabeth Flores - visit 10 local preschools and daycare centers each month, providing a high-quality storytime and leaving a kit of books and literacy-promoting toys for the kids to enjoy. They also visit parent nights at these locations to spread the word about early literacy and demonstrate easy literacy-promoting activities parents can do at home. This program has had a total attendance of 1,672 since January!
The award will be presented at CALCON on September 21. Our program will also be featured at the SPELL Symposium on September 8, so that other libraries can learn from our model and potentially imitate it at their own locations.
A big, big thank you to the State Library for making this possible!
