Making History in Greenhorn Valley!

Author: amy.martin / Date:
The new Greenhorn Valley Library is getting ready to celebrate one full week of being open to the public, and what a week it’s been!  Sixty five people joined us for the ribbon cutting ceremony despite sub-zero temperatures last Wednesday to listen to opening remarks, to cheer as the ribbon was cut, and to enjoy refreshments and live music by the fire.  Despite an early closure on Wednesday evening and a late start on Thursday, our gate count continues to multiply each day, as word spreads that the library is open!

There was standing room only at the grand opening celebration on Saturday and over 1100 visitors walked through our doors to enjoy the festivities between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  The day was filled with fun for the whole family including a performance by the Rye Elementary Choir, a delicious lunch, and an opening reception for our current art exhibit that features photographs depicting the beauty of Colorado City in honor of its 50th birthday.

In addition to representatives from the Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, Oz Architects, H.W. Houston Construction Company, the Colorado City Metro District, Greenhorn Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Latino Chamber, we were also honored to welcome State Librarian, Gene Hainer, and Colorado Library Consortium Regional Consultant, Sandy Messick, to our library on Saturday.  The entire building was abuzz with excitement and appreciation as community members marveled at the beauty of this new facility, tried out devices and databases and loaded their bags with books and movies to enjoy.

It has been a pleasure to watch families come in each day after school to use laptops and checkout materials… to watch teens gather who are excited to have a new hang out…. to overhear children at the gas station who see the library logo on my jacket ask their mom if they can have their own library card….to interact with residents who can’t wait to volunteer at the library… to watch small hands play with puzzles and board books as rays of sun pour in through the windows…and to be an important part of history in the making!

We look forward to a bright future and are excited for the opportunity to serve the Greenhorn Valley!  Thank you to everyone whose hard work has made this project a success!
