Lunch at the Library?

Author: Janina.Goodwin / Date:
Do you ever think it's a weird combination to serve lunch to kids at the library?  The librarians of my childhood would remind us to wipe our faces after we took a drink from the splashy drinking fountain so we wouldn't drip water on the books.  If we had to eat lunch in the school library we were asked to wash our hands before handling books.

Well libraries in many cities are doing this - and we have found it to be effective as well.  Here is a link to an interesting article about summer lunch at the library: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/30/well/family/free-lunch-at-the-library.html

I'm sharing this with you because I just crunched the numbers of the summer lunches that we provided through our library sites this summer, in partnership with Pueblo City Schools.  I thought you'd like to know what the impact of this partnership was.  For 32 days the Pueblo City School lunch truck visited 4 library sites to deliver lunches to kids, averaging over 168 kids fed a day!

Total Lunches served at Library Sites: 5177
Books in the Park – Bessemer: 878
Books in the Park – Fairmount: 495
Lamb Library: 2170
Rawlings Library: 1834

Looks like a successful summer all around - and I think this has the potential to grow for sure!  Thanks for all of your help in this program's success!
