Active Shooter Resources

Author: Janina.Goodwin / Date:
By now you’ve probably heard about the tragic events in Clovis, NM where an active shooter opened fire in a public library.  This is a very sad and scary situation, and we will continue to monitor the details as they are made public.
We haven’t talked about active shooters in over two years, so I wanted to take the time to refresh you about the recommendations from Law Enforcement about what to do in the unlikely event that you are part of an active shooter situation (at work or anywhere else).

Here is a video recommended by the Department of Homeland Security demonstrating what you should do in an Active Shooter Situation.  We have used this for Active Shooter training in the past – it is very helpful:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VcSwejU2D0

Here is a link to a presentation that I gave at Staff Day in 2015, the active shooter information begins on slide 18.  I would recommend reviewing this for yourself and discuss questions and concerns with your supervisor:

The main points are, in an active shooter situation we should RUN.  If we can’t run we should HIDE.  And if we have to – we should FIGHT.  The Department of Homeland Security has created some helpful printables that you can print for yourself, your workspace, or even your family and friends.  I would recommend these documents:
https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/active-shooter-pocket-card-508.pdf
https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/DHS-Active%20Shooter%20Educational%20Sheet_0.pdf
But others are available and their website is very helpful.  If you are concerned or curious, I would recommend that you explore this very helpful resource: https://www.dhs.gov/active-shooter-resources-translated

We are planning to have active shooter training from the Pueblo Police department during the February Staff Day.
I hope you find this information to be helpful!
